"Newmont’s African operations are in Ghana and include the Ahafo mine and a development project known as Akyem. The Ahafo mine is located in the tropical, cocoa-growing region of mid-western Ghana, approximately 180 miles (290 kilometers) northwest of the capital city of Accra. The Akyem project is located about 80 miles (129 kilometers) northwest of Accra.
Ahafo contributed approximately 8 percent of Newmont’s worldwide equity gold sales in 2007. Ahafo and Akyem together have approximately 17.4 million equity ounces of gold reserves, representing 20 percent of our global gold reserves at the end of 2007. In addition, the African region contains more than 53 million tons of non-reserve resource mineralization at an average grade of 0.064 ounces per ton."
