| Description: | The origins of the oil industry in Indonesia and those of what subsequently became Royal Dutch Shell plc are closely connected. Shell's historical links with Indonesia are strong. The discovery of commercial quantities of crude oil in Sumatra just over 100 years ago led directly to the formation of Royal-Dutch Petroleum. Shell Companies in Indonesia (SCI), is the term used for convenience to apply to the compilation of individual Shell companies in Indonesia, with each individual company forming part of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company/ Shell group, a worldwide leading oil and gas company. Although The Royal Dutch Shell plc was established in The Hague in 1890, the history of Shell in Indonesia can be traced back to 1884 when a Dutch man, Aeilko Jans Zijlker, discovered traces of oil in Sumatra. With a license obtained from the local ruler, Sultan Langkat, he drilled his first well, but it was dry. A year later, he drilled Telaga Tunggal 1 in Pangkalan Brandan in North Sumatra. This time he struck oil and Telaga Tunggal 1 began to produce in commercial quantities. |
